BREAK DOWN OF 1ST SEMESTER, SYLLABUS, IOE

The beginning of BE life is always difficult. In my experience, at first, I was too lost in engineering due to the new world, new crowds and new story. To adapt to these variables, you should always be straight forward and make some new friends and be in a good circle. Obviously, it’s our human nature to bond pretty fast therefore, we do not feel alone and depressed.

Now after years of 10+2, entrance preparation, dreams, dedication and finally getting into engineering college; the chaos of covid-19, the lockdown and all, a small fraction of your dreams is obviously shattered but it’s not the end of the beginning, we all know for sure because there are many more things to do in this 4 years with many hindrances coming along your way, hitting you hard, making you weak and still not giving up no matter the magnitude of the storm. With all these, obviously, this pandemic and lockdown won’t be the first obstacles of your engineering life. Even if it is, just consider this as someone hitting you with a pebble: you know what to do, eh? Just run in the right way, you will be in your destiny.

I am sure you are bored with all these mind fu***** words after joining engineering just like ONLINE CLASSES. I know some of you are trying so hard to pace up with the teachers, some are trying to concentrate but still nothing is helping. Yes, everyone had gone through the same. I am still struggling on this factor and sometimes I regret, why do I waste my fu***** hours in Microsoft teams when I can learn much better and effectively through YouTube. But trust me guys, if you can go side by side i.e. via teachers and YouTube, Engineering will be like a cup of tea (what I believe, but I don't follow.)

In this blog, I will be writing about the books and manuals to follow for 1st semester IOE students. This blog is completely based on my experience.

(Caution : If you are an intruder searching for materials only, scroll down to the bottom.)

1.       C Programming

As a civil engineering background and never being from the computer field, the hardest subject for me in my 1st semester was C programming. I don't know why but even though I have understood those logics and all, when it comes to writing codes, I was always lacking something. In the C lab, I have done 100% and even though I have done something wrong, I can correct those mistakes myself at ease. But I had always failed to spark in the written exam. Speaking about the materials and books I have used for C-Programming are " A textbook of C Programming by Ram Dutta Bhatta" and different manuals provided by clubs and political parties. The problem in manuals is that there are too many mistakes so, I strongly recommend you all to follow the book by R.D Bhatta. It is more than enough for C programming.

Let me add my story about RD Bhatta book. In WRC, the quantity of this book available is limited so I didn’t get that book therefore I followed the pdf version. Even though I completed and revised twice (I studied C for 14days before the exam), I made a silly mistake in the exam. I was fucked considering all my preparation and dedication on C because it was my 1st Engineering exam and when I had counted the marks (which everyone does after exam), no matter how many times, 32 was like the Everest, too far and too top for me. In the end, due to luck and all, I got 47 in C, all thanks to the teacher who checked my copy.

If you want to follow YouTube, here is the link below which is quite good and most of the students follow this channel;

Channel Name : easytuts4u

                SUMMARY :
                                    Book       : A Textbook of C Programming
                                    Author   : Ram Dutta Bhatta

2. Drawing I

This subject is like your girlfriend; if you spend most of the time with her, she will make you happy else, she will be your headache. In my experience, I couldn't get bonded to drawing at first. Maybe I didn’t give much attention during class or due to limited drawing materials (table and other things), I had struggled quite hard. But thanks to my friends and YouTube, they taught me Drawing and I practiced all the tutorials given by sir myself. It boosts my confidence and helps me visualize 2D and 3D drawings. Yes, if you close your eyes and visualize all those dimensions then, drawing is like a children's art book; just draw lines and color it, you are an artist. ‘Practice makes man perfect.’ Obviously, it is a correct statement but the complete statement is ‘Practice yourself and teach others the same.’

Just like my friends taught me, I also taught my circle of friends once, twice, thrice until they understood all and that made Drawing I as an easy subject. This year, it will be very very difficult for you to learn online but don’t be demotivated because at the end, it’s you and you only who can impact and emphasize learning ideas and ace the drawing. I had only practiced tutorials and still got better marks. So, I suggest you practice all the tutorials and also follow this book, “Engineering Drawing I by Mahesh Chandra Luintel.”   It will be more than enough for you but I suggest you all to practice more. If you practice now, during the 3 days study timeframe, it will ease your mind.

You can follow above mentioned channel for drawing. It's quite good and useful.

There is a culture in every Engineering college for Drawing and the name of that culture is "TOFAA". In the above picture, you can see the art of doing Drawing using the principle of Physics and Chutiyapan. What you do is when you are assigned the assignment, you don't care about it at the beginning months. Before 2/3 days of the deadline only, you start your assignment and when you know, it's not possible to copy everything in a systematic manner, you follow down the culture of "TOFAA" even your conscious mind didn't want at the beginning. And everything down the road becomes dark afterwards in most of the case.

So, I suggest you to start your assignments from the first day.

                                    Book       : Engineering Drawing I

                                    Author   : Mahesh Chandra Luintel

3. Engineering Chemistry

This subject is relatively easier for 1st semester students because you have aced those 10+2 complex chemistry. Easier to read but harder to get good marks though. I had read the notes prepared by KRS sir and BKG ma'am and also the book given by the library. So, I strongly recommend you to follow those notes and the yellow book, “Textbook of Engineering Chemistry”.

For WRC students, you won’t ever forget this subject because this is the only period where it’s compulsory to wear a uniform. It was a beautiful memory though.

SUMMARY :

Book       : A Textbook of Engineering Chemistry

                                    Author   :

4. Thermodynamics

The good thing about Nepali writers is they have written a book related to IOE syllabus thus it will be easier to read and the content is also limited. But if you are enthusiastic and want to learn the core, I will suggest you to follow other English writers' books.

For me, I used “Fundamentals of Thermodynamics & Heat Transfer by Mahesh Chandra Luintel” only. In this book, you can find many numerical questions in the exercise portion and I highly suggest you to complete all the numericals of the exercise part. It is more than enough for you. It is a numerical based subject so, I am sure once you understand the theory and formulae, you are good to get 60+ marks.

Book       : A Textbook of Engineering Chemistry

                                    Author   :  Mahesh Chandra Luintel

5. Engineering Mathematics I

In engineering, mathematics is a key subject. For 1st semester, it’s just basic mathematics so most of the contents overlapped to 10+2. With that being said, if you are weak in derivative and integration then it will be a very hard subject for you. In order to ace this subject, you must have a basic understanding of derivative, integration and co-ordinate geometry. If you think you don’t know any of these, don’t worry because the good thing is all the questions will be asked only from the textbook and practice is what you need to do to get good marks.

Just like 10+2, you have a complete book "A Textbook on Engineering Mathematics by S.P Shrestha" and its complete solution. You can easily get this book in your college library and for manual, you can either buy near your college stationery or use the pdf version.

SUMMARY :

Book       : A Textbook on Engineering Mathematics I/I

                                    Author   :  S.P. Shrestha, H.D. Chaudhary & P.R. Pokharel

6. Workshop Technology

It’s just an additional practical subject to relax and obtain 50 marks. It will be fun to do a workshop with your fellow classmates. Well to mention the reality, you will also feel exhausted rubbing those metals till 4:30/5:00pm.

7. Applied Mechanics

This is the main beginner subject for civil engineering students but for others, you feel like, “Why the heck am I reading this subject?” but I think it’s just a basic subject, so knowledge of mechanics is probably important in future during software making or other analysis factor.

To be precise, this is one of the headache subjects and probably you feel like an engineering student with all those calculations especially beam and frame numericals (and it’s easy if you understand the logic). I have only followed the manual of applied mechanics and I won’t prefer you the same.

First of all, understanding is the main factor therefore, reading books will obviously create a sight of any particular chapters. You can follow “Vector Mechanics for Engineers by Beer and Johnson.” if you are searching for English writers and “Applied Mechanics for Engineers by Dr. Hari Ram Parajuli & Er. Sudan Neupane.” if you want to follow IOE based Nepali book. I specially recommend you to follow Nepali writers first and after completing this book, if you feel like only limited (I am sure you don't feel that), follow English writer books.

As most of the questions will be repeated, you can only follow the manuals and old questions and still get a good score. As beam and frame covers maximum marks(10-15) and students struggle on this particular topic, I suggest you to follow YouTube or you can ping me on Facebook, I can help you with this topic. This topic is very important for civil students because you are going to study the same thing in next semester as well. (2nd sem - Applied / 3rd sem - SOM)

SUMMARY :

Book       : Applied Mechanics for Engineers

Author   :  Dr. Hari Ram Parajuli & Er. Sudan Neupane

8. Basic Electrical Engineering

The electrical teacher during my time was the best so, his class notes and manual were enough for me to get 60 out of 80. Those circuits and all that string of lines, I was like, “What the f*** is this man?” but over time, I managed to understand everything. I don’t know about the books but manual was sufficient to get good marks for me. The problem in manuals as always is mistakes so, I suggest you not be completely dependent on manuals. The best book for basic electrical if you want to follow is “A textbook of electrical technology by BL Theresa & AK Theresa.”

SUMMARY :

Book       : A Textbook of Electrical Technology

                                    Author   :  B.L Theresa & A.K Theresa

9. Engineering Physics

This is basic engineering physics, so it’s not that complex. In fact most of the chapters overlapped with 10+2 physics. The worst side of this Physics is the contents are very long and you may be lost inside the maze of Physics. The weight of numericals is not much than the derivation and theory so, you can’t skip anything.

Because of too many contents, what students do is they skip some chapters and trust me, IOE will surprise you with the question pattern asking most questions from that skip chapters. You can’t be 100% sure about the marks distribution and blindly follow that and skip chapters. If you start reading Physics, I suggest you not to stop. You can obviously check the question bank and study frequently asked questions more than once.

“Fundamentals of Engineering Physics by Balkrishna Sapkota, CP & BKB” is the only book I followed and I recommend you the same. It is more than enough to ace Physics. Almost all the questions are repeated. If you see new questions in question bank, for that you can check manuals too. But I highly suggest you not to follow manuals before completing that book. Notes are also available of the respective teachers in a stationery which is quite fruitful.

SUMMARY :

Book       : Fundamentals of Engineering Physics

                                    Author   :  Balkrishna Sapkota

CONCLUSION :

For those who read all the above, congratulations! You are one step closer to banging 1st semester. And those who skipped all the above and directly reading this conclusion then Sorry mate!! You missed one heaven of a beautiful love story of my life.

As I have mentioned above the manuals to read but never said anything about the writers, you can follow either ' Heritage Publication' or 'G.L Book House Publication' ; whichever you choose, choose the latest edition. My choice : G.L Book House

I have said "easy", "just like +2", "engineering a cup of tea" for more than once, probably my fellas are laughing or back fellas are angry but as I have said before, this is completely based on my experience and truth be told, I used to study 3-5 hours daily so I feel easy. But 2nd and 3rd year is completely different story which I will be sharing in future. 😆
